Department of Labor Updates

Workplace Safety and Health Challenge Sponsored by Department of Labor

  • The U.S. Department of Labor is challenging creative and technological types to design tools to help young workers to understand their rights in the workplace.
  • “New technologies have the promise of making our safety and health resources even more accessible for workers and employers,” said Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. “Successful proposals could take many different forms, such as interactive and informative games, a smartphone app, social or professional networks, or data visualization.”
  • There is $30,000 in prize money to be awarded with top prize at $15,000. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2012. For more details, visit Worker’s Safety Challenge and Michael’s blog.

6 Members Appointed to Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health

  • Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis re-appointed two members and appointed four additional members to the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health. The appointees represent all stakeholders including the public, employers, employees, and government for 2-year terms. The committee has 15 members and meets at least twice each year.
  • “The new ACCSH members have a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience on a breadth of safety and health issues spanning the construction industry,” said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels. “We want good, safe jobs for American workers, and I am confident that these new members – representing the views of labor, management, government and the public – will use their expertise to provide valuable advice and recommendations toward our shared goal.”
