Workplace Safety News Roundup

Occupational safety pros rumbled, innovated and made us smile this past week. Here is your weekly roundup of a little of the latest in workplace safety news.

The Great  American Shakeout

On Thursday more than 14.5 million people from California to Italy and everywhere between braced themselves for an international earthquake emergency drill – dubbed The Great Shakeout. At zero hour (10:18 a.m. Pacific Time), business people in Guam ducked beneath their desks while school children in Southern California ran for the closest cover.

The event was designed specifically to raise awareness about earthquake safety protocol and did not collect any useable data. However, many thousands of businesses used the coordinated day as a good excuse to re-educate employees on emergency protocol. Did you participate? National Safety Council Goes Mobile With Conference App

Meanwhile in Orlando, the National Safety Council Congress and Expo is gearing up for a great week. If you are going, check out this nifty little app for both Android and iPhone the NSC recently released. While light on the news and information, it will help you map out your conference itinerary for the week, getting you to the right places at the right time for the most pertinent information sessions. Think of it as a one-stop resource for all those floating itinerary and speaker bio papers you are usually gripping while trying to shake hands. This conference marks the event’s 100th anniversary, meaning a few extra bells and whistles. If you are attending, let us know what you thought of the presentations.

CDC Presentations for the Busy Professional

Did you know that you can watch the CDC’s Grand Rounds presentations via webcast? While focused on general public health topics, they sometimes have events come around that speak directly to workplace safety. The next Grand Rounds will be held Tuesday, November 13 at 1 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. And just in case you missed last Tuesdays presentation and are interested in child mortality rates, you can see all the archives here.
