  • The Whistleblower Protection Program (WPP) will now report directly to the assistant secretary of OSHA, David Michaels

    The goal is to strengthen employee’s voices in the workplace without fear of retaliation. This change represents that the WPP has become “significantly elevated priority status”.

  • OSHA reiterates Sweep Auger Policy guidelines for employees entering a grain bin while a bin sweep auger is operating

    OSHA Assistant Secretary David Michaels provides additional guidance to employers in the grain industry regarding employees entering a grain bin when a sweep auger is operating. He explains “if an employer can demonstrate that a worker in a grain storage structure is not exposed to hazards presented by the equipment, the standard does not require the equipment to be deenergized before a worker enters the bin.”

  • OSHA Reminds employers to post the injury/Illness summaries

    Don’t forget that the OSHA form 300 Injury and Illness logs must be posted from Feb 1-April 30, 2012.

  • NIOSH publishes tips and guidelines for employers to prevent workplace violence for home healthcare and social service workers.

    Home healthcare and social service workers face unpredictable environments while in the field and can be exposed to verbal and physical abuse. Although OSHA has guidelines in place, NIOSH has released a quick fact sheet aimed at increasing awareness of the facts and tips to further protect these workers.

  • NIOSH publishes study demonstrating the effectiveness of protecting health care workers through the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act

    The act signed into law November 6, 2000, required employers to provide safety engineered devices to employees at risk of bloodborne pathogen risk.  Since then the needlestick injuries have decreased 38% according to a new study.  The study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
