OSHA Latino Safety Conference Remarks

The OSHA Latino Safety Conference was held on this week in Houston, Texas. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis was on hand to discuss some DOL details. Here are some of the highlights…

  • Effective April 28th, OSHA will assure that its Compliance Officers check and verify not only that the training has been provided, but that it was provided in a format that the workers being trained can understand.
  • OSHA will also launch a construction industry pilot program: letters will be sent out to the mayors of ten cities, requesting the city building inspectors to partner with OSHA and alert OSHA of any unsafe working conditions.
  • OSHA protections apply to every worker in the United States, including those who are undocumented.
  • Protecting Americas Workers Act – The Act will increase penalties and make it a felony when a workers death or serious injury results from a willful violation. Today, it is a misdemeanor.
